A 29-room retreat in Nepal’s remote Kali Gandaki River Valley has taken the top spot on Robb Report’s 2026 list of the world’s greatest luxury hotels, which ranked the top 10 individually and grouped the remaining 40 by region. Shinta Mani Mustang earned the top spot less than three years after opening on August 13, 2023, in Nepal’s Mustang district. Set on a hillside above Jomsom, the hotel sits in one of Nepal’s most sparsely populated Himalayan regions. Locally sourced stone, slate, and wood shape the lodge, pairing interiors by Bill Bensley with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame mountain views from every room.
Stays require a minimum of five nights, with itineraries that include horseback riding, archery, high-altitude hikes, monastery visits, and consultations with an on-site practitioner of traditional Tibetan medicine. Another excursion leads to the 800-year-old village of Lubra, a center of Bon religious practice.
How Robb Report Selected The World’s Best Luxury Hotels
Robb Report began compiling its annual list in 2023. For the 2026 edition, the publication consulted 24 luxury travel specialists it calls Travel Masters. Each specialist endorsed five newer hotels they regularly recommend, along with established favorites, and explained why those properties merited inclusion. Hotels endorsed by multiple advisors made the ranked top 10. The remaining 40 selections appear by region without individual rankings.
“Every place on this list has been vetted and endorsed, again and again, by the world’s most exacting travelers,” Robb Report said in its explanation of the methodology.
The properties immediately behind Shinta Mani Mustang show what earned repeat support. Singita Kwitonda lies beside Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and has eight suites, each with a heated plunge pool. Guests can join gorilla treks from the park headquarters, while the lodge’s conservation lounge traces the area’s history and Dian Fossey’s work.
Scotland’s Hope Lodge sits within WildLand’s 100,000-acre Sutherland estate and can be booked in full or by individual room during selected periods. It opened in May 2026 following the restoration of a 19th-century hunting lodge. Park Hyatt Tokyo returned in December 2025 after a 19-month restoration that redesigned its 171 rooms and updated its restaurants while preserving its architectural identity. In Florence, Collegio alla Querce converted a former boarding school into an 83-room hotel with a heated pool overlooking the city.
Remote Luxury Hotels Shape Robb Report’s 2026 List
Of the 40 hotels grouped by region, Europe received 10 selections, while North America and the Caribbean received eight. Oceania and Africa each had six, Asia had five, Central and South America had four, and Antarctica had one, with White Desert Echo Camp marking the continent’s return to the list. Italy and India each account for three of the full 50. No Middle Eastern hotel appears this year, which Robb Report attributed to conflict deterring visitors.
Robb Report said its selections continue to move beyond major cities toward countryside and wilderness properties. Cristalino Lodge in the Brazilian Amazon combines guest accommodations with a private 28,167-acre nature reserve, while Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge works with government agencies and Indigenous communities to support native salmon stocks around Vancouver Island.
Major restorations are also featured on the list, including Hotel del Coronado’s emergence from a $550 million preservation project in 2025 and the April 2026 opening of Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena across several restored historic buildings, including a 16th-century temple.
