The St. John Carnival is a reminder that Carnival season isn’t just for the beginning of the year in the Caribbean. It’s a year-round celebration.

Officially known as the St. John Celebration, this festival is truly unlike any other Caribbean Carnival. Unlike the majority of island Carnivals, which are rooted in pre-Lenten religious tradition, the St. John Celebration is deeply anchored in freedom, heritage, and the resilience of the Virgin Islands people. Festivities commemorate the abolition of slavery in the former Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848. St. John’s Celebration culminates on the Fourth of July.

The celebration kicks off with the Pan-O-Rama competition, a larger-than-life showcase of the Caribbean’s iconic instrument: the steel pan. The island’s best bands battle with set lists of reggae, calypso, Soca, R&B, and more. Of course, with any Caribbean celebration, the cuisine and flavors are the centerpiece. The Food Fair kicks things up a notch with authentic dishes and delicacies that are a must-try, while local chefs compete for bragging rights to “Best Dish.”

Beyond the food and music, festival-goers can expect to witness the traditional Moko Jumbies and much more that make this experience truly unforgettable. Choosing A Band Or Section

One of the most exciting moments of the St. John Celebration happens in the heart of Cruz Bay on July 4. Revelers arrive early to pick the best spot to witness the electrifying all-day parade of technicolor floats, steel pan bands, and Carnival troupes decorated in feathers and sequins.

A Carnival troupe is a highly organized group of masqueraders who serve as the heartbeat of the Carnival celebrations. Each participant wears a variation of the troupe’s overall theme costume, and together they march, dance, and perform through the streets. Joining a troupe puts you in the center of the most electrifying experience during Carnival. Troupes can range from a few dozen members to over 400. Masqueraders dance to soca music behind music trucks and floats, and keep the energy alive.

Past participants have joined L’Amour Carnival Troupe, a newer troupe created by Pamela Leverett-Love around 2022. The troupe represents people of every age, size, color, nationality, and gender. Gems of the Caribbean is another celebrated, community-focused masquerade and cultural troupe that has participated previously.

Troupe fees typically range from $700 to $1,200, depending on the intricacy of the costume. Costumes are custom-made and tailored to fit. If you’d rather cheer from the sidelines, organizers recommend showing up in a brightly colored costume decked out with sequins, feathers, and an elaborate headdress.

Transportation And Accommodations

Island accommodations fill up quickly during St. John’s Carnival season, so book lodging and flights well in advance. Since St. John does not have an airport, visitors fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas, then head to the Ferry Dock for a 20 – 45-minute ferry ride to Cruz Bay.

Staying On St John

Wharfside Village Hotel, located directly in the heart of Cruz Bay, where all the main festival events and parades take place, is the ultimate base for St. John Carnival. Other options include Cruz Bay Boutique Hotel, Gallows Point Resort, and vacation homes on Airbnb.

Pro Tip:  Consider staying on St. Thomas instead. St. John books up extremely fast during Carnival. Many attendees opt for a hotel on the East End of St. Thomas and take the 15-minute public ferry ($14 round trip) right into Cruz Bay for the festivities.

Getting around St. John is simple, which is one of the benefits of attending a smaller Carnival. Uber and rideshare do not operate on the island. The go-to option is the Safari taxi, an open-air truck that serves as shared public transit.  Fares are cash-only and range from $5 to $20 one way.  People staying near Cruz Bay will find that walking is the best way to get around.

Tips for Navigating St. John Celebration

Safety & Crowd Tips

St. John is generally considered safe, but a few precautions go a long way during a busy festival. Stay alert in crowds, keep cash and valuables to a minimum, avoid walking alone at night, and never lose sight of your group. Keep an eye on your drinks to prevent spiking.

Packing Essentials

Comfort should be first in mind when packing for the St. John Celebration. August in the U.S. Virgin Islands is filled with hot days and tropical weather. Average temperatures hover around the high 80s. Humidity is high. Pack light, breathable clothing, closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes, and rain gear because tropical showers are common.

Don’t forget to include your sunscreen, a hat, a well-stocked fanny pack, a portable charger, a fan, medicines, insect repellent, band-aids, hydration packs, and a collapsible water bottle. Between the dancing, drinks, and hot weather, it’s easy to overdo it. Pace yourself and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

The St. John Celebration is one of a handful of Carnival experiences that take place in the summer, setting it apart from the pre-Lenten calendar that governs most. Beyond the fetes, it’s a deeply meaningful gathering rooted in community, culture, and the enduring resilience of people who fought for and won their freedom.
