Pristine beaches. Miles of lush tropical greenery. Incredible volcanic peaks in the backdrop. This is probably how most people picture the small island of Nevis. It’s a gem in the Caribbean that’s tucked away for travelers who want both adventure and tranquility in what feels like a private escape. Pamela Martin wants you to feel all of that and so much more.
As Chairperson of the Nevis Tourism Authority Board and the island’s Film Commissioner, Martin is leading the charge in rewriting how Nevis shows up in the world’s imagination. Under her leadership, the newly launched Nevis Film Commission is transforming what began as a pandemic-era surge of film productions into a permanent, story-driven industry. She’s on a mission not just to attract cameras, but to reclaim the island’s narrative on its own terms.
It is a vision rooted in authenticity, cultural pride, and an understanding of where travel is heading. For Martin, film is not a marketing tool. It is a mirror that reflects the soul of a place back to the world.
Travel Noire sat down with Martin to talk about the future of Caribbean film tourism, what makes Nevis unlike anywhere else, and why the most powerful thing a destination can do is tell its own story.
Travel Noire: What was the vision behind launching the Nevis Film Commission, and what gap were you trying to fill?
Pamela Martin: The vision of the Nevis Island Administration to diversify the economy on Nevis significantly advanced between 2020 and 2022, when nine films were shot on the island during the COVID-19 pandemic — an unexpected, but powerful opportunity for Nevis. This period served as bona fide proof, demonstrating our ability to successfully host and support complex, fast-paced productions with demanding shooting schedules.
Hosting movies such as Christmas in the Caribbean and One Year Off was a great start, but building a sustainable film industry requires long-term infrastructure. Today, we are transforming that momentum into a permanent foundation for the Nevis film sector.
The creation of the Nevis Film Commission marks a strategic step toward not only attracting productions but also reclaiming our narrative and taking ownership of our story. Just this past year, Nevis was the set of Paradise with You, premiering Fall 2026 as part of the network’s popular “Love of a Lifetime” slate featuring Taye Diggs and Cynthia Bailey.

Travel Noire: How does film and visual storytelling accomplish something that traditional tourism marketing cannot?
Martin: Film and visual storytelling build on the strengths of traditional tourism marketing by deepening how a destination is experienced and understood. A brochure or advertisement can beautifully highlight Nevis’s beaches, mountains, and resorts — offering a clear and compelling invitation to visit. Film augments that invitation. It immerses audiences in lived experience — the laughter of families, the tension of conflict, the intimacy of romance, the joy of celebration.
Traditional marketing says, “Come see Nevis.” Film adds, “Come feel Nevis.”
Together, they bridge the space between discovery and connection — turning interest into something more lasting and personal.
Travel Noire: Can you walk us through how a production coming to Nevis translates into long-term tourism impact?
Martin: A film production does far more than arrive, shoot, and depart. It plants a lasting memory. In the short term, the economic impact is immediate: local crews are hired, and businesses — from restaurants to transportation providers — benefit directly.
But the true value lies in the long-term visibility and emotional resonance. When Nevis is woven into a compelling narrative, it lives on globally. Audiences don’t just recall the island’s scenery. Rather, they remember how Nevis made them feel, and that emotional connection transforms passing curiosity into intentional travel.
Beyond the screen, every production becomes a network of accidental ambassadors. When international cast and crew (teams of 20 or 30 people) spend time here, they carry their experiences back home, sharing stories with family, friends, and colleagues, amplifying Nevis’s reach through true, word-of-mouth storytelling. Film doesn’t just showcase Nevis. It immortalizes it. The island becomes part of a story that continues to inspire journeys long after the cameras stop rolling. The economic ripple ensures residents feel the benefits for years to come.

Travel Noire: How do you ensure that the stories told about Nevis through film reflect the island’s authentic cultural identity?
Martin: We safeguard our narrative by working closely with productions, encouraging the use of local crews, and guiding them to portray Nevis authentically. This island is not a cliché backdrop. It is a living community shaped by deep history, enduring traditions, vibrant artistry, and extraordinary people. By prioritizing authenticity, we ensure that every story filmed here reflects the genuine spirit of Nevis that allows audiences to connect with the island’s cultural heartbeat rather than a manufactured image.
Travel Noire: Where do you see film tourism heading in the Caribbean over the next five years, and how is Nevis positioning itself ahead of that curve?
Martin: The future of Caribbean tourism is increasingly story-driven and rooted in authenticity. Travelers are moving away from mass-market experiences. [They’re] seeking destinations that feel genuine, distinctive, and culturally rooted. Nevis is already ahead of that curve. We’re not trying to be all things to everyone. Instead, we are leaning fully into what makes our island rare, intimate, and deeply meaningful.
Travel Noire: What is the biggest misconception travelers have about Nevis, and how are you working to change it?
Martin: The biggest misconception is that Nevis is simply quiet. While we do offer remarkable tranquility, the island is far more than a retreat. Nevis is alive and rich with history, culture, and creativity, offering experiences that enrich and inspire. Through film and visual storytelling, we’re reshaping perceptions, showing the world that Nevis is not just a place to relax, but a destination defined by depth, connection, unforgettable substance, and lasting impact. Nevis stays with you long after you leave our shores.
