As the summer season draws near for 2026, there’s an alarming shift: a significant drop in bookings for transatlantic flights from the United States to Europe. In a recent analysis by Cirium, a leading aviation data and analytics firm, U.S. to Europe bookings for July 2026 have dropped by 11.2% compared to the same period in 2025.

Analysts point to rising fuel costs, geopolitical uncertainty, and shifting consumer priorities as contributing factors to the decline.  Yet, even as reports of airlines increasing bag fees due to soaring fuel costs emerge, airlines are also responding to the decline in European travel with lower fares.

Know The Booking Sweet Spot

It’s long been believed that the “sweet spot” for booking travel to Europe is three to five months out. However, Expedia’s 2026 data challenged that conventional wisdom. As Travel Noire previously reported, Expedia found that the best booking window is actually 31 to 45 days in advance, including international travel.

Another myth debunked in Expedia’s report is that booking flights on Tuesday night is optimal. In fact, Friday and Saturday nights are the best times to snag cheaper fares. Speaking of days of the week, avoiding peak travel days can also produce meaningful savings. Opt for traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays rather than on Fridays and Sundays.

The most affordable fares to Europe begin to appear after the New Year, through April, and then again in August through November as destinations embrace their low and shoulder seasons.

Embracing The Shoulder Season

Shoulder season is a traveler’s secret weapon. Defined as the period before and after a destination’s peak travel season and low season, when fares are relatively low during an optimal time to travel. It’s important to note here that shoulder season varies by destination. For Europe, April to early June usually yields lower prices and fewer crowds, then again in late August until early October.

According to the European Travel Commission, flight prices and hotel rates can be 20 to 30 percent lower during the shoulder season than in the summer months. What people usually love about shoulder season, compared to the low season, is that the weather is typically ideal for comfortable exploration, and you’re less likely to run into travel hiccups.

For example, in France, you may experience partial shutdowns at smaller businesses during August. Many residents take summer vacations, and these smaller shops are closed on Mondays (we learned the hard way).

However, for people who don’t mind braving often the colder and quieter months in Europe, November offers the deepest discounts since it’s the cheapest month to travel to Europe. Major cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, and Paris are experiencing their lowest air and hotel fares, according to Going.

The best way to ensure you get the best prices to Europe is to track your flights and move quickly. The best apps and resources will let you track prices, view trip itineraries, and receive real-time fare updates. Here’s a breakdown of the best apps:

Expedia

The Expedia Price Tracking tool will notify you when prices change, so you don’t have to start a new search every day to see if prices have changed. Just turn on push notifications and wait for the right time to buy.

Going

Formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights, Going is ideal for notifications on mistake fares and deeply discounted international flights, and it also alerts travelers to price drops. You choose your departure airports, and the app will alert you to deals.

Google Flights

As one of the most accessible travel planning resources, Google Flights is always a helpful go-to. What’s great about Google Flights is that you can track prices for your searched dates or, if plans are flexible, use the “any dates” feature to find flight times and costs that work best for you.

Hopper

Hopper analyzes trillions of data points to offer you data-driven guidance on whether you should book your trip now or wait for a better price. It’s best for predicting future price changes. One component users love is the “freeze” feature, which locks in prices.

Skyscanner

The saved feature and price alerts work in tandem. These features in Skyscanner help travelers track flights and save on fares, while the platform monitors prices. Users will be alerted as fares change.

Europe is a premier region to explore, with countries offering incredible experiences ranging from culinary spectaculars and stunning, relaxing beach vacations to alpine adventures and Christmas markets in the winter, to name a few.  The cheapest time to travel to Europe depends on timing and flexibility. With the right planning and flight price tracking tools, you will forge your own good luck.
